Polka Dots & Steel-Toe Shoes

I was lucky to be losing nothing but my sanity sitting at home unemployed during my first summer break of university. I was determined to find a job, and when I got one, I discovered that retail is no place to look for sanity.

Character Design

I started this project by drafting a script and testing different character designs. Deciding on my drawing style set the tone for the narrative, and the polka dots from uniform became an unexpected source of inspiration.

Storyboarding & Layout

Comic design is about more than just what’s illustrated. How the panels are laid and the space between them (gutters) is equally important. In this comic lots I packed a lot into each page, and the general box pattern breaks down as the store erupts into chaos.

Inking & Finishing Touches

I decided to ink everything and keep a black and white color scheme with a pop of red. I laced this little homage to my atrocious uniform throughout the comic to convey a sense of urgency and stress.
